School Entry Requirements for Independent and State Schools

We have prepared a list of schools listing their exam timings and exam types. We will be happy to provide you with a copy should you wish. Whilst every effort has been made to providing accurate information, you should always verify the details directly with the schools of your choice.

Independent School Entry

11+ examinations comprise English (comprehension and creative writing), Maths and Verbal Reasoning. Some schools, however, only require English and Maths. A few schools will also test in Non-Verbal Reasoning – these exams are held in January of the year of entry. In addition, most schools will request a formal interview as well as a report from the current school.

Most schools accept applications between October and early December in the year prior to entry. Please be aware of your preferred schools' deadlines for submission of applications, as they will adhere to these strictly.

State School Entry

Entry is decided by examination only which takes place between September and November in the year prior to entry. Applications are accepted from June to early September.

Some schools will restrict entry according to catchment policies. These should be contacted directly for details.
